Charge of the Light Brigade! by Lightengale Charge of the Light Brigade! by Lightengale
Rather, Photon Brigade. And it's more like a prance than a charge. Whatever. It's three awesome powerhouses teaming up in their new, canonically approved costumes!... Shup.

Little bummed that Carol and Monica's faces are so flat in the expression but the more I tried to change it the worse it got. Also, I have so little concept of perspective, zero grasp of color theory and OMGWHYCAN'TIDRAWBACKGROUNDS?!

But my incessant whining aside, please enjoy! ;)

You have no right for the whining! This is so great! the colors are so vivid and they're all so beautiful but i love that they don't have the same faces and not typical comic book bodies... but amaaaazing bodies, still. lol I didn't think you could ever top Ali's costume but you might have with Monica's. You need a job as Marvels costume guy at least! ;) I love this!!

A team-up too cool for Marvel to handle.

(only logical reason why this team-up doesn't have a book yet)

Oh wow! How awesome! I think whatever whining you've got going on on your end is unwarranted because this is an oh-so-fabulous piece with three amazing characters who don't get quite enough love. While Carol may have spurts of popularity, the other two are so firmly fixed on the Z-list that it truly is practically a sin.

Monica looks rather fierce and I really like the look she's got going on. She's a character who has really struggled to remain relevant and not look too dated. I rather like the shorter hair on her and I feel that bodysuit of hers is quite sexy but also presents her as a series heroine with those '80s shrug boots and the futuristic jacket. Ali is right at home in the centre of things and even attracts most of the attention in this piece. As usual, I really enjoy your redesign of her and feel it truly is a fabulous look for her. Of course, everytime I see your rendition of Ali I'm reminded of Kylie which is never a bad thing since they're practically the same person. The slight smirk to her expression is quite nice and the pose is great. I also have to commend you on the usages of blue for the jewelled areas of her costume since it helps to add some colour to an otherwise very simple colour scheme. Lastly we come to Carol, I adore her new status as Captain Marvel and she's finally been given a costume that is true to who she is as a character. Since she's a feminist, it only seems appropriate that she would wear a unisex costume that wouldn't focus on her legs or ass but simply on Carol in general. Her hair is a bit odd in the new book but you've made it look quite nice here. There's more... logic... to it here since I can actually imagine how it's done. You've drawn Carol really nicely here so props. It is rather interesting to think that two of these women rose to prominence in the '80s (Ali and Monica) and two of them were also nearly killed by Rogue (Carol and Ali). Carol and Ali really should team-up and get even with Rogue. That little river rat has it coming for sure.

The other aspects of this piece are great. The background is actually quite nice and I don't think you need to worry too much about it. The blues and purples help to ensure that the focus remains on the three women. The limited amount of stars at the top also makes sure that the eyes draw upwards once again solidifying a focus on the women. The power effects are really cool. Each of them feels unique and suits the character. Carol's is red and gold... they feel aggressive yet vibrant. Monica's is a cool blue and white perhaps emphasizing her more even temperament. Then we have Ali's which span the colour spectrum and just truly represents her multi-faceted personality and gay-tasticness.

Overall, this is an absolutely beautiful piece and it fits in so wonderfully with the rest of your gallery. It's hard to come across amazing art of female characters that aren't focused on tits, ass and eraser nipples. I really appreciate how you depict female characters and which ones you choose to represent. Dazzler is so under-appreciated it's not even funny! Bravo!

Always great to get feedback from you. However, I think Z-List is a bit of a stretch. ;) Dazzler has too strong a fan base for that - despite what her detractors might say - and leading X-Treme X-Men certainly ups her status some, at least temporarily. I've made peace with the background and actually think it's best for the subjects. Considering how colorful they are, I didn't want to distract. It's just funny because almost every one of my pix has a background at some point... Until I freak out and erase it in a spastic panic like the touchy, temperamental artist I am. lol

I'm really glad Monica's look has gotten the feedback it has. It was the quickest redesign I have ever done. I looove her original look so homage to that was a must and the jacket and boots' color are a nod to the current look but there was no way I was keeping her in a trench coat. I like her 'fro but I didn't feel it worked with this look, not to mention she was due an updated look. I've always thought she was sophisticated and wanted a look to convey that. Carol's new costume has grown on me. I think it really fits her persona. I think a lot of people forget that technically, Carol was an X-Man with the team in the Outback and wish it was brought up more... And what else can be said of Ali? She's my muse.

Thanks again for taking the time to share your thoughts. It's always appreciated.

I feel that X-Treme X-Men is an insult to Dazzler fans. Rather than actually give her a title with prominent characters from her own universe and with characters she is friends with, we've instead got something which feels like what was done with Psylocke and the Exiles around the time Ali was with New Excalibur. It's just unfortunate that she seems to get passed over sometimes. It's frustrating for me too... since I do draw her frequently and it's painfully evident how people pass over her because she's not Rogue or Emma Frost.

I'm glad you ditched the afro for Monica. I think this feels more modern for her and fits in with a more contemporary aesthetic for African-American women. It's very Janet Jackson.

Actually, Carol wasn't "technically" an X-Man. Her psyche may have been living in Rogue's mind and could temporarily take over Rogue's body but Carol was in space at the time as Binary working alongside the Starjammers to protect Lilandra from her enemies. Carol turned down the X-Men prior to that when Xavier (stupidly) decided to let Rogue stay with them. That's at least how I see things. The psyche that was living inside Rogue was a "time capsule" of Carol prior to her absorption while the "real" Carol had been much changed since then particularly in that Rogue's attack on her left her with little attachment to the memories she had which sucks. Rogue definitely did a number on her that should never be excused.

You're certainly in the minority of Dazzler fans, that is for sure. What is an insult to her AND her fans is her entire Uncanny run under Matt Fraction's pen. While I wish at least one 616 character was with her in X-treme, I'll take Dazzler running with an AU team under a writer who actually gives a shit about her than being in ANY book where she is ignored or treated like a joke, no matter how well it sells.

The problem is that there's been such a huge misconception concerning Dazzler and that is that many writers seem to think that she's this huge joke even though this is a woman who took down Rogue numerous times back when Rogue had Ms. Marvel's powers. I hardly think that qualifies her for joke status especially since she's one of the most versatile mutants this side of Storm. The vast majority of what she's been written like lately has been pretty atrocious. I think the only thing I've liked featuring her was that one-shot written by Jim McCann... and that was due to the fact that he's a fan of the character.

There's also no guarantee that X-Treme X-Men will be a good book or that it'll write her well. While I have yet to read the title (Marvel hasn't done much to encourage me to read their work lately aside from the amazing Captain Marvel title), I have seen that reviews are mixed at best. By and large, AU titles tend to be ignored by the vast majority of fans and even if they get a strong following they qualify more as cult books. It's frustrating for me sometimes as a Dazzler fan because while I love drawing her and that should be enough to make me happy it's frustrating that hardly anyone shows up to look at or even pay attention to pieces I'll draw of her in comparison to drawings I do of Rogue. *shrugs* I just think that Marvel CAN give Dazzler a push into the forefront AND write her well. Just look at what they're doing with Captain Marvel. To be honest, I'm thinking that Marvel needs to give more female writers jobs because, quite honestly, they seem more competent than the frat boys they hire to write the majority of their work.

Dazzler has been my favorite superhero since I was four. She became my muse at 13 and a few years later, my favorite thing in the history of ever so to say you're preaching to the converted is a monumental understatement. Also, you're not saying anything that any Dazzler fan hasn't thought, discussed, ranted and/or obsessed about for decades.

Of course there is no guarantee X-Treme X-Men will be good. What is that even supposed to mean? What qualifies something guaranteed top quality? You praise the one-shot in part because McCann is a fan, well so is Greg Pak. In fact, the man is downright swooning over her in every interview. Not that this guarantees quality because Kieron Gillen stated having a crush on the character and boy did that turn out to be a fleeting one, obvious to anyone that read his Uncanny run. Perhaps you should try reading it before passing judgement. I have serious doubts about these "mixed at best" reviews because while I didn't particularly go nuts for the first issue, from everything I've read and heard, I was in the minority. I also think that is my own issue from wanting only (what I think is) the best for Dazzler as opposed to the quality of Pak's writing. However, I loved issue 2. It was quite fun and the Dazzler love is abundantly clear. In addition, Greg Pak has stated that X-treme will most definitely have an effect on the 616 universe so it is not just a throwaway AU. Like I said, try reading it before dismissing it and like I stated in my previous comment - my bottom line - "I'll take Dazzler running with an AU team under a writer who actually gives a shit about her than being in ANY book where she is ignored or treated like a joke, no matter how well it sells."

Yes, it's better to have her being in *something* where she isn't ignored or written poorly. It seems that Ali is destined for D-list status and Marvel isn't intending to save her from that for a while. The last time she had a presence in an ongoing was New Excalibur and that was another instance of Ali's removal from being around those she is closest to. It was a fascinating run and Chris Claremont did some interesting things with the character but it almost feels like people don't even recognize that title as ever having existed because Wolverine or Rogue weren't on it. It will take time to see how well X-Treme is written and how well Ali comes across in it. My point is just that it would be nice to Marvel give her a little more of a push in a book that isn't such a risk. Know what I mean? When are we going to get to see Ali be a crucial member of the X-Men again? I'm sure these are things you feel yourself but are just glad to see her in SOMETHING.

I tend to have issues in general with Marvel and its treatments of its females. It's been a losing battle with Marvel to try and get them to give their women more of a presence while their rivals DC continually knock the ball out of the park with their women. I mean really... Captain Marvel is the ONLY solo female title Marvel has. That's sooo lame! Though they were all before my time... Marvel once had Ms. Marvel, She-Hulk, Dazzler, and Spider-Woman all in their own solo titles.
